x2 on the bore diameter question. Savage built a scout in 7. 62x39 years ago. The bore diameter was .308 and most owners reported poor accuracy for this reason.
Odd, before i sold mine i could get 5 rds of Hornady SST touching at 100 yards no problem.

I never tried surplus/corrosive stuff, i imagine it wouldn't be as good, but good enough for plinking.

Nice handy little rifle, just too many in the safe that didn't get shot, and this one was overlapped by a number of other calibers.
Looking down the barrel, of 1984...

I've owned one of these rifles as well and ran Hornady / Sellier & Bellot / Privi / Tula / Remington /and a slurry of surplus. Accuracy was never better than 2" regardless of the ammo. I found this odd as I own, and have owned a number of extremely accurate Savage rifles. I was really disappointed with it. Once burned twice shy with a Savage in this caliber. Will sit on the fence until (new) owners report their accuracy. I admit, I may have owned a lemon.

So if this is built on the axis platform, does it take standard axis mags?

And I guess that also means it's a long action (as all axis are long action rifles)?

At that price, a Zastava mini mauser, or even a used CZ would make more sense.
A free society must outlaw harming innocent people to function, but when we seek to curtail what all of us can do, rather than holding each of us responsible for what we actually do, we give up on freedom itself.

Proper maintenance and paint do the same thing as stainless. The CZ has a hammer forged barrel, does the Savage?
