SHOT SHOW 2018: Emerson and Spyderco knives

My first “good knife” was an Emerson Commander (long story). I first met Ernie Emerson in 2002 at the New York Custom Knife show

And then again at the USN Gathering V show in Vegas (yes I am wearing custom made Emerson themed boots with knife holders)

I have also been to his shop in Las Angeles (though I just missed him that day). I was glad to meet up with him again at SHOT

and see his new production knives, the CQC-7 fixed blade, SEAX, tactical kwaiken, and battle axe.

The sheath for the fixed blade

A custom version of the Battle Axe

I also got to play with his recently introduced balisong

It was at the same 2002 NYCKS that I met Michael Janich, a renown edged weapon specialist who went on to found Spyderco’s Martial Blade Craft program. I was happy to see him again at the Spyderco booth!

Michael designed some blades for Spyderco such as the Yojimbo 1 and 2, the latter of which now has a companion trainer.

I was also happy to see that Spyderco is bringing back another one of Michael’s designs, the Janisong, a unique handle-within-a-handle balisong

I will let the expert demonstrate

Spyderco is very protective of taking pics of their prototypes so the only other knife I photographed is the newest version of the James Keating Chinook, which is closer to what he originally intended for the knife (I have a gen 1)

Me too, I’d rock that balisong in a heartbeat op if I wasn’t scared of getting jacked up.

what is the point of the janisong?

It’s a new take on the balisong. The point is that it’s a new design, and is just cool. I know a lot of people that edc it. It’s blade shape is actually quite useful.

thank you! here is an interesting bit of trivia regarding that pic with Michael Janich...in the first pic he has the prototype for the Yojimbo 1 in his pocket...so i saw it there first before it was released to the public...that's why in the second pic i am purposely holding the Yojimbo 2 trainer so you see not only our evolution but the knives as well lol
