Double-ended sounds kinda kinky, but very practical.
He can't shoot like that with a stock Savage and a Bushnell scope

    Noob question....
Can I use a barrel clamp to install the barrel on the upper instead of this torque tool?
I have one of those Wheeler Aluminum Barrel clamps.
Or the fact that this would be clamping forward to the gas block and far from the barrel nut be an issue?

The purpose of this tool is to eliminate any twisting force on the barrel and receiver.

It inserts through the receiver and directly into the barrel extension. When you torque the barrel nut the force is being transferred directly into the barrel torque tool which eliminates the possibility of any twisting force being transferred through the rifles barrel or receiver.

This is hands down the best way to get the job done.
