I hunt deer with my unmodified sks, I sneak up to the deer and poke at it with the bayonet to make sure it is dead before grabbing it to gut it.

I have thought about it, but frankly it's too damn heavy. I'm sure I'll use it one of these days(just to say I did), but my 270 is lighter and more capable (not to mention scoped) so it gets the nod usually... And my 243 is even lighter...

It's a real problem, I always want to take them all, hunting or to the range. Sometimes I think of downsizing just to remove the anxiety over it lol.

There are wild hog farms here in Alberta that let you shoot them with whatever you want to shoot them with. For $500.00 you could do it up!

30-30 has quite a bit more muzzle energy.
At 100 yards and beyond the X39 starts to catch up, but is still using a 125g bullet.
My question for those using the SKS is , are you just pulling the ball and replacing with softpoint or handloading?

7.62x39 is my favorite cartridges and I don't think most loads live up to it's potential. There is a good write up on the firearms blog: Exploring the Untapped Potential of 7.62×39 as an “All Around” Hunting Caliber

And this is a great comparison to 308
