    Where We Serve

    This map shows the approximate time it takes for a BK117 or AW139 helicopter to be dispatched from one of our bases and fly to a particular area of the country.

    A STARS helicopter is not necessarily used to respond to all incidents. Ground ambulance and airplane ambulance are other options which are taken into consideration when selecting the most appropriate emergency medical transportation. Flight times and the decision to transport by STARS helicopters are affected by a variety of factors including weather conditions, availability of resources, location of landing sites, and the condition of the patient.

    An emergency physician with a background in transport medicine selects the most appropriate option and oversees the care of the patient during transport.

    In the early 1980s, studies showed about half the deaths due to trauma could have been prevented if patients had received critical care sooner. When Dr. Greg Powell lost a young mother who was being transported from a rural area to Calgary by ground ambulance, he decided something had to change. That’s when he founded STARS.

    Less than half the population of Western Canada lives in major urban centres and has access to critical care within minutes. For the other half such access is measured in hours. That can mean the difference between life and death; full recovery or permanent damage.

    With STARS, those living in rural communities, working in remote areas, travelling on highways or being transported from community hospitals to major medical centres, receive the very best in critical care in helicopters staffed and outfitted as mobile ICUs.

    WHY FLY?
    The more quickly a patient receives treatment, the much better their recovery.
    Timely treatment of stroke, heart attacks or brain injuries can save more than $1 million per patient.
    The economic benefits of helicopter ambulance missions are six times higher than the costs.
    Patients transported by helicopter ambulance are more likely to survive than those transported by ground ambulance, even though they are more severely injured.

    Members of the STARS air medical crew are on call at each base 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are in the air approximately 10 minutes after accepting a call.

    Our team of highly skilled medical professionals includes:

    advanced life support paramedics;
    critical care nurses;
    transport physicians.
    The paramedics and nurses are highly dedicated and skilled individuals. Many of them hold part or full-time positions with high performance advanced life support emergency medical services (EMS) and major hospital critical care departments including emergency, intensive care and cardiac care units.

    Our transport physicians provide online medical control oversight during all missions and participate as a flight crew member on approximately 5 per cent of patient transports.

    Occasionally, the STARS helicopter is used to transport specialty teams to assist unique patient populations. These include:

    Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) teams for pediatric patients (typically those who are younger than 17 years old);
    Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) teams for newborn patients (those who are younger than 28 days old).
    One air medical crew member assists the specialty teams during these missions.

    The STARS aviation crew includes pilots and engineers. Both are employed full-time at STARS.

    PILOTS
    To ensure the greatest level of safety on each STARS mission, two pilots – a captain and a first officer – are required to fly the helicopter. Pilots are on call at each base 365 days a year.

    STARS captains:

    -Have a minimum of 3,000 flying hours;
    -Have 300 hours of IFR experience (flying at night or during low visibility conditions by using their cockpit instruments);
    -Have 100 hours of STARS flight experience;
    -Hold an Airline Transport Rating;
    -Hold an Instrument Flying License.

    STARS first officers:

    -Have a minimum of 500 flying hours;
    -Hold an Instrument Flying License.

    ENGINEERS
    All maintenance and development on the helicopters are performed in-house and carried out by licensed aircraft engineers. STARS aircraft engineers perform:

    -Aircraft maintenance and servicing;
    -Aircraft modification and development;
    -Night vision imaging system development;
    -Emergency medical interior design and development.

    SAFETY

    At STARS, safety is of the utmost importance. To help ensure the safety of all crews and patients, as well as the general public, the aviation crew follows a set of strict operating rules and a rigorous aircraft maintenance schedule.

    STARS currently operates a fleet comprised of Airbus Helicopters BK117 and AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters, which have been specially outfitted for helicopter EMS operations. At any given time, one helicopter is the primary, in-service aircraft at each of our bases and is available to respond to missions.

    The helicopters in our fleet rotate in and out as back-up and support aircraft for when one of the primary helicopters is out of service for scheduled maintenance or repair. In addition, back-up aircraft play a significant role in training activities and community outreach events.

    Sucks that you have to pay tax on a charitable donation.

    I'd forgo the patch if it was just straight money for STARS. Sod the government.
