450bm is significantly weaker than 45/70.
Great short range white tail cartridge for states that have straight wall case restrictions, or for big bore AR fun. Otherwise I just don't see the allure, 250gr pill at 2200fps is down to 1524 at 200yds, and 250gr bullets in 45cal have dreadful sectional density (0.175, which is slightly less than a 120gr 308 bullet.)

450 Bushmaster. A 45-70 it is not. Approx 80gr water vol vs 50 IIRC so physics....
But for a short little round I love it. I load the 300gr Hornady XTP Mag (and also have some Barnes Buster 325gr on order) in a 16" Gunsite Scout. A very handy and compact package. Have no doubt that a well placed shot will deliver the terminal energy needed for any big game inside 150 yards and arguably more.
For sure. It'll definitely kill game. It won't really do anything a 308 can't, and it has some disadvantages regarding trajectory and energy at longer ranges, but if we all bought 308s then this wouldn't be GunNutz now would it? Lol
I feel like something closer to 375 or 40cal would be better though, you end up with either really bad sectional density or really low velocity with the 45cal in such a small case... A 220gr 375 would get you more velocity, a better SD, and slightly better long range ballistics...

Buffalo Bore has a 360gr hard cast load moving at over 1700 fps (amongst three other different loads) for this as well.
I don't think the idea was to replace the 45-70 but it is a very accurate (out to 200), fast, big round that the industry seems to be embracing over some of the other choices like 458 Socom, 50 Beo, etc. Nothing wrong with those options but there are quite a few rifle choices out there now - bolt, single shot, and AR/semi auto platforms. Not to mention factory ammo from Hornady, Winchester, Remington, Buffalo Bore, etc. Plus, it's just fun to shoot!
Yes, the beowulf and socom likely won't take off until a large ammo company starts producing ammunition.
Remington is already bringing the 450 out in NR semi auto form for canada.
If it's either loud, obnoxious, fast, hated by the general population or any combination of these, I OWN IT!!
Isn't the 458socom bottle necked? That would greatly limit the market appeal, because it wouldn't qualify for the states with straight wall case restrictions, which is a pretty big market from what I hear - winchester just released the 350 legend to try and capitalize on that niche.

got it.....great info guys, i see now that really the only appeal is with states with straight walled restrictions....didn't realize that there were laws regarding this anywhere...that would make sense why its so popular today..
wanted to go with a shorter lever gun or bolt for some hard hitting close range bush work, but i'll stick with a 16" mag fed 308 bolt gun....never fails
good info on this thread
watched a video of comparison between 45/70, 450 bushmaster and 458 socom into ballistic gel......the 458 socom was clearly by far the winner for not only penetration, but waay bigger wound cavity

A lot of states in the east and mid west have shotgun only zones. Most of them now allow straight wall rifle cartridges in the shotgun only states, which is a major reason why Ruger did the Ranch in 450BM. Some (maybe all?) also have minimum caliber requirements.
As for the 458socom being any better, they're pretty close to identical so anything you saw in videos that was dramatically different was likely due to the bullets being different more than the cartridges.
