Before they allowed the really strong poison in SK, we would have gopher derbies. Map of land, usually a section per team, 2 - 4 man teams, 1000 rounds of 22 per person, and a speedloader for our 10-22 nasty mags. I had 6 and it was a challenge to load and shoot fast enough, what a target rich environment! 400 - 600 per person / day for the weekend was the norm. There were that many of the damn things! After the gopher doom came out, that dropped to 75 - 100. That stuff works! But it did take the fun out of a derby. Usually kept a can of brake cleaner a bore brush and some clp handy, after a while you needed it!
In some cases we kept pellet handguns handy, as sometimes the darn things would try and run under our vehicles. One fellow found out the hard way why a pellet gun as opposed to 22.
Some damage was had. Good thing it was his jeep, not mine.

Range of shots was from 3 ft to 300 yards (223 for those, just to be a smart arse.) But 5 - 25 yards was the norm. I miss those days...….
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Where I was last weekend, the damn badgers are going after the gophers, making the problems for the cattle even worse. It seems like the well drained slopes surrounding cattle dug outs attract both the gophers and the badgers that try to dig them out, and make for a dangerous area for the cattle to walk through to get to the water. One or two badgers can do a lot of damage to the terrain.

At times I was shooting gopher heads in their holes at less than 10 feet away and having to aim over their heads to hit them square on.

Agreed - hard to match the features of this optic for the money.

Of course my answer was “let me chase them”. So starting last week, I’ve been chasing them three times now. 192 have been “chased off” so far, plus 2 skunks & a badger.
This land has not been hunted for 20 years at least. There are thousands of them. I stocked up on .17HMR for my ugly, cheap Savage. I’ve got it scoped with a Vortex worth three times what the gun is; for all it’s ugly, cheap plastic stocked appearance, this gun shoots sub MOA groups at 100 consistently.
They have a couple of small hummocks on the edge of the field, maybe 8 ft. High. I set up one of those beach sun shades, stick a lawnchair inside, my tripod, cooler with water and food. And ammo...LOTS of ammo.
Our gopher population was pretty low for several years; you might actually need to walk a few hundred feet to get serious numbers, and we’ve Never had to do any walking to get 50/60 in an afternoon.
This year is like the good old days; gophers everywhere and they aren’t hunter-shy. They’re often very cautious when they see someone with a gun, but these ones have obviously never been predated by anything but hawks, so they’ll stand there looking at you while you drop several right beside them. Awesome fun!
Your kids are lucky to have you there to sort out the gophers!

16.1" Tactical Solutions lightweight barrel. Completely changes the balance point on the rifle.

This optic is stellar. Going back to non-Mark 5 optics is hard after much time on the range...

Sounds like a great time! We were able to clear about 400 each in two days. No shortage of fun with these numbers!

YoDave Rest one of the best out there bar none, and the old warhorse. CZ452 with the CHEAPEST bushnell you can buy. But it gets the job done.

And yes, my elevated position is standing in the box of the truck.
