Its a barrel sleeve.

It's removable, but you have to remove a threaded pin. Its covering a full size bull barrel.

Could it be replaced by a custom, beefier barrel sleeve? With some creativity and machine work (i guess the obvious answer is yes)... I find the factory sleeve looks rather small/thin.
