With the 1897 the nudging forward to cycle was a feature that was incorporated by John Browning and I believe acts as an out of battery safety for the shotgun. It was a feature of the original Winchester produced guns and is not a defect in the Chinese replicas.
I’ve shot skeet and 5-stand with mine (also singles trap, thanks to it having removable chokes). Handle it with authority and it cycles fine. I’ve had other, ostensibly better, pumps that have caused me more grief on doubles than the 97 ever has.
Some cheap shells sometimes stick, but a chamber polish would probably help. I just shoot Score 1145fps target loads in mine and it never causes issue. 1200fps sometimes fails to extract.

if anyone can confirm the winchester bayonet lug & heat shield will fit then I am all in for one.
