    This is kinda like MDF thing (or at least looks similar in terms of color).

    Mine looks just like the top pic with the light wood and wood grain. But when I take the butt plate off its very fiboris. You can still see the wood grain, but it's very saw dusty if that makes sense. I haven't hit it with sand paper to see if it smooths out tho. Could be just a very rough mill job.

    If it's Catalpa it's normal. It's very rough, porous, soft and hard to work with. Won't take any stains (well...very little). It's naturally resistant to rotting and mold. I recommend black tea if you want to bring out the grain. Not much else can be done to it...but the finish looks actually decent, so I may just leave it as it's for now.
