    Do I need to be a range member before first handgun purchase in Quebec?

    I live in Montreal , If I buy a handgun ,should I be a range member before purchase ? is the goverment ban handgun ?

    You are in QC so short answer is yes.

    Long answer: you could be a member in Ontario or USA buy will still need to provide proof of gun club membership before your transfert is approved.

    You will also need your Loi 9 certificate and shoot once a year to maintain it

    Yes,
    I bought my first handgun a few week ago. I received an email from the rcmp saying to transfer their email to the SQ with proof of membership of shooting club (scan of membership card).
    CFSC training, CRFSC training, Bill-9 test, become a member at a shooting club, only then buy handgun, ...and lots of waiting in between.

    Also factor in the time it takes to be member.
    Most clubs have wait lists or specific times they accept new members.

    then they usually require you to do an onsite safety/orientation course

    Because of COVID those are quite backed up.
