My guesstimation is that the price of a barrel of crude was way over inflated for the past 15 years. This is just a correction that was long overdue. With a decreased price per liter, people will travel more, that is, after the Covid-19 crisis is in check.
I would imagine that all those with deep pockets decided to take advantage of this world pandemic and short the stocks. That cause a crash and then they pick the stock up again at bargain basement prices. Meanwhile, they filled their pockets with the loot from the panic selling of joe-q.
