Haven't lived in Vanc for over 20 years, but you are not alone. Hang around some of the friendly stores and you will make good contacts, but I am not sure if there are any stores right downtown. Going a bit further out you are not far from Lever, Italian, and Reliable. Even further will get you to good stores in Burnaby, Richmond, New West, Surrey, etc.
Good luck, just do not try bringing new toys home on a Transit bus.
