"New measures they say will improve firearms enforcement in Alberta" but alongside Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Glasgo.
- Starting with Doug Schweitzer, he had a meeting with the Public Safety Minister.
- The province is not a fan of the OIC one bit.
- They got tonnes of feedback from across AB. Looking for a made-in-AB solution.
- Some quips about "maybe not this way in Toronto"
- Jump to the Premier to speak
- "Canada does have strong gun control measures now, measures we support."
- "Unfortunately there are politicians who choose to go after law abiding Canadians"
- "While some in Ottawa believe in targeting legally purchased inanimate objects, Alberta believes in targeting criminals"
- Creating a Alberta Firearms Advisory Comittee made up of 3 MLAs, plus retired law enforcement, armed forces, hunters, sport shooters.
- Second action designed to prosecute "real" gun crimes. AB government is partnering with CPS and EPS to do all firearms testing in Calgary and Edmonton for all law enforcement working in the province.
- Right now many police units in the province are waiting up to 8 months for feedback from RCMP firearms labs.
- Right now, Alberta sends about 600 firearms to the lab in Ottawa, the new lab will be able to look after Calgary & Edmonton plus additional 750 cases
- They will be likely supporting legal challenges to contest aspects of the OIC and appointing a local CFO.
Damn, the feed cut as Michaela Glasgo was starting.
And we're back: "Frankly Alberta has had enough of Ottawa's meddling." Strong statements from MLA Glasgo
Q&A starting:
- Q: Is this a move towards an Alberta Police Force and Alberta Pension?
- A: The idea of an Alberta Police is very relevant for rural Albertans. We've not made any final decisions.
- Q: Is the province considering a ban on commercial rent evictions? (Lol how is that a part of this presser?)
- A: We're considering it, strongly urge commercial landlords to give commercial tenants a lifeline.
- Q: This ban is about assault-style guns, who's using them for what purpose?
- A: All of these guns have been purchased by law abiding owners, who the government has considered to be safe and legal owners. These firearms have been used legally and safely by Canadians. You can put all kinds of Hollywood words on them to characterize them but..." feed-cuts here.
So the big takeaways are: Alberta CFO continues to move forward, new Alberta Firearms Advisory Committee, new Alberta Firearms Testing Lab for law enforcement.
