What are you intending to hunt? That is a major factor in what is appropriate.

First ting is recoil, do some research and find a caliber that you can practice with and shoot comfortably. Stay away from magnum calibers, for now anyway.
Second is ammo cost, find something that is not going to cost too much to practice with. Practice enough and you will be able to put your bullets where you want them, that matters most of all.
With that being said, I would get a 308 in a mid or high end Savage or a higher end used rifle. Bolt action would probably be a better choice. If you save a lot, you can put it towards a better scope. Some think a 308 is not powerful enough but remember, the 303 and 30-30 have filled more freezers than anything else in north america.

    My thoughts.

Buying used is a bit of a gamble but not a big concern for me. Pays your money, takes your chances. Used has always worked for me.

Get the biggest caliber/rifle you can comfortably handle. I've got a .375H&H that shoots quite nicely, actually a bit easier on perceived recoil than some .30s I've had. I would suggest a .30-06 or .308. They'll work on pretty much everything in North America, just that you may have to be more cautious about your shot in some cases. The advantage I see to a .308 is using surplus ammo for practice to save a bit of money.

Go to your local gun store and handle as many different rifles as you can. Fit can be quite important. I would recommend considering a bolt gun with scope.
Once you've gotten it, practice. A lot. Find somebody who can go to the range with you until you get it zeroed. Last year I helped a young guy who showed up with a new rifle who was having kittens with it. Things got easier for him when he used my rest as opposed to the Lead Sled he had. I tried a shot with it and the whole operation was awkward and uncomfortable for me.

Study the ballistics on the caliber you choose and the parameters will guide you to what range to zero for and what you can and can't reasonably do. Regardless of what the rifle is capable of, I'm really reluctant to take a shot on game past a couple hundred yards. Even at that range environmental conditions can show a very noticeable impact. Regardless of factory or handload ammunition, use of a chronograph will be an asset.

Get into reloading. Not as big a cost saving as years ago but it can still add up. Most factory ammo works well but with reloading you can tinker to find what pleases you the most.

A lot of things to consider and undoubtedly with experience and knowledge you'll look for different things with your inevitable second gun.

    Good luck.

For your first rifle, buy new ...lots of good deals out there with low cost rifles.

You can get into a rem 783 with scope for less than 600.00 OR just go out and buy a Kimber Montana right off the bat

Welcome to CGN, a place where you won't find a shortage of opinions. So I'll give mine too.

They don't make 'em like they used too, back when QC was practiced.

Look for an older model(70's-80's) in very good condition, or better.

For some, searching for a classy rifle at a good price, can be almost as rewarding as the actual hunt itself.
