Out of respect for veterans Black Friday sales are typically held after the national day of remembrance. The fact you need that explained is even worse.

Is it poor taste for businesses to stay open on Nov 11?

Cause if it is you should be lobbying Walmart, Canadian Tire and the thousands of other retailers who are not only open today, but have items for sale and are advertising.

Just today there were a boat load of flyers dropped on my driveway

    Agreed.

I see some businesses that skirt around the edge of being inappropriate by advertising discounts for veterans, though typically I see them prior to Nov 11th, not on it. I did get a spam email from a hotel chain today noting discounts for veterans, so that was a bit tacky based on the timing rather than the premise (and no, I'm not a veteran).
