The B25 is widely regarded as the king of superposed shotguns and its hand engraved side-plates are often thought of as its crowning glory.There are four grades of enhancements for the B25, of which the Contre-Platine is the best there is. It is the only grade that includes side-plates as an option. The engraving is superb, and shown here is a small sample of the wide choice available. The wood is of the highest quality, while the checkering is lavishly intricate and generously applied. Teardrops have the effect of visually elongating the side-plated action and streamlining the overall profile of the gun. The 3-piece fore end is another example of the stocker’s art. Two plates of wood are seamlessly fitted to the barrels and held in position by three screws passing through the side ribs, with the ejector system fitted inside. Only the bottom piece moves in order to disassemble the barrels. All Contre-Platine B25s are delivered with a finely tooled leather case.

The B25 represents everything we know about making guns.
Engraving, wood selection and finish are important, but precision is the true measure of a handmade shotgun.
And tolerance is how we measure precision. The more minimal the tolerance, the better the fit between the barrels and the mechanism, and between the iron and the wood.
Our gunsmiths ensure that each adjustment is accurate to 1/1000mm. This is impossible to achieve with industrially produced versions, where the tolerances must be greater to compensate for the imperfections present in machine-made construction.
And as you can see, the heart of the B25 is the mechanism itself, John M. Browning’s masterpiece.
The result is a refined and beautifully balanced, fully bespoke shotgun.
THE BARRELS
A B25 begins life in the barrel workshop.
It starts with the choice of quality steel, which at this stage is in the form of solid bars that are successively hot-forged to increase their strength. They are drilled and hammered at the choke.
Each pair of B25 barrels is silver brazed together for outstanding durability and the side and top ribs are then tin soldered on.
Next, the chambers are bored and the chokes reamed, before the inside of the barrels are polished to ensure a consistently even spread of shot.
This is followed by ‘striking off ’, the process through which the ‘garnisseur’ removes all braze and tin residue, leaving the line of the barrels faultless.
FITTING THE BARRELS
Now comes the ancient and ingenious process of lampblacking.
By using the carbon generated by the flame of an oil lamp (one thousandth of a millimetre thick), the gunsmith can see where there has been friction between the barrels, action frame and fore end iron. He then makes any necessary adjustments until it is perfect.
At this point the breach closing is so smooth and firm that it has its own distinctly audible characteristic, a fabulous click with perfect resonance. This is the famous ‘Browning sound’.
Finally, the barrels undergo a thorough polishing before being ‘rusted’ and brushed repeatedly, until they take on the characteristic crowblack colour of the finished piece.
THE ENGRAVING
Time is the essence of this most delicate of processes.
For example, it takes 15 years to become a Herstal master engraver, and an engraving can take up to 500 hours to complete.
But then again, this is a local tradition that has been in existence since the 16th Century, when Liege engravers were first appointed to the French Court.
The technique remains the same.
With deftness of touch, the engraver outlines a rough sketch in fine lines on the polished steel with a dry point needle.
Then, using handmade chisels and hammers, an elegant motif, scene or pattern emerges in exquisite, complex detail.
Almost anything is possible, including the inlaying of precious metals like pure gold, green gold, yellow gold, silver or copper for a spectacular finish.
Each action frame is house marked to confirm its authenticity while the engraving is signed by the artist who created it.
And that confirms supreme talent, patiently applied.
THE WOOD
This is where nature lends a hand.
The root or first fork of Turkish walnut is used, not only for its magnificent grain but also for its strength and suppleness.
Sustainably grown stocks are uprooted, rather than cut down, then squared off into blocks and carefully dried to avoid twisting or cracking.
Through a similar process to the lampblacking of the barrels, the gunsmith paints a red dye on to the action frame, which he then locks onto the stock.
Using tools made by himself, he adjusts the parts for a perfect fit.
After the fitting, the stock and fore end are reshaped to their final form, while the measurements are corrected to the wood edges, plate and handle.
At this point the checkerer brings his unique skills and tools to the process. With an artist’s eye and a master craftsman’s touch, he adds millimetre-perfect pattern and subtle texture to the form.
The final finish is arrived at by repeated polishing and rubbing with grain filler, before the wood is waterproofed by linseed saturation.
