Had a 783 HB before their most recent bankruptcy. Thing was impressively accurate
I have a 783 HB laminate model from before the bankruptcy and it’s my favorite gun, beating winchesters’s and Tikka’s etc. very good trigger, and one of my most accurate rifles…. Wish I had bought a stack of them when they were $400 or less.
The one I have is the cheaper XP version without the accutrigger replaced the scope with a Weaver Kaspa 2-7x32
I can't compare the 783 with the Axis, but I have a very accurate Savage model 11 in 243 and a very accurate 223 Vanguard and I'm very happy with both of them but my son's pre bankruptcy 783 laminate 26" HB in 22-250 is consistently more accurate than either of them whether it's shooting factory for the brass or with handloads it doesn't seem to matter it shoots everything very well. It's too bad they don't seem to be producing a 783 with a 26" barrel anymore but I know you don't need that extra length to get great accuracy

Savage Axis would be my choice as there are a ton of them in circulation , and parts are easily found . With Remington's many problems and restarts , hard to know when parts will become unobtainable .
I have 2x 783 hb. One in 223 and one in 308. Both sit in a MDT lss chassis. Both are very accurate. Both feed well although I had an issue with one 223 MDT mag but it wasn't a fault of the gun.
The axis rifles generally shoot well. They're ugly but they work. Of the two I'd take the 783 over the axis
