SHOT SHOW 2010 - SIG 516 and SIG E2

SIG 516 and SIG 716

SIG has saw fit to enter the AR market starting this year. They have two lines, the SIG 516 in 5.56x45mm NATO and the SIG 716 in 7.62x51mm NATO in various configurations. Both designs use a pushrod gas piston system with 3 position adjustable gas valves. The gasblocks appear to be standardized across the range of models, is skeletonized, and as a M1913 rail on top to extend the rail beyond the free float tube. Barrels across the line appear to be chrome lined, cold hammer-forged free floating barrels.

The SIG 516 come in the following models: PDW (178mm barrel, 2.75kg), CQB (254mm barrel, 2.9kg), Tactical Patrol (368mm barrel, 3.15kg), Patrol (406mm barrel, 3.3kg) and Precision Marksman (457mm heavy barrel, 3.65kg). All barrels have a 1:7 twist, and the M4 contoured, except for the PDW and Precision, which are heavy barrel. Carbine models come with a milspec diameter buffer tube and SOPMOD stock, whereas the Precision model comes aith a Magpul PRS stock and 2-stage match trigger.

Other standard features across the range include ambidexterous safety, and free float M1913 quad rail.

SIG 516s are supposed to hit LE this summer, with civilian sales to follow. The 14" model was quoted in the range of $2000 USD.

SIG 716
The basic design of the 716 seems to be an upsizing of the 516, with the same kind of block, rails and stocks and gas system. Although the press packet says "standard M14 type steel magazine", we were told by the SHOT rep that the magazines were actually Armalite AR-10.

The 716 is currently "in development", with the following models on display at SHOT

SIG E2 Enhanced Ergonomics P226 (Also comes in P229 E2)

Sig has new pistols coming out this year based on P226 and P229, but features a new frame incorporating a reduced backstrap and grip circumference. The grip is a modular one pliece screwless design and features a new texture. Frame redesign includes reduced trigger reach, redesigned decocking lever and the Short Reset Trigger as standard (trigger used previously in the Sig Elites).

Other standard features include, SIGLITE night sights, integral acessory rail.

MSRP is $1,149 USD and they now ship with 3 magazines.

On a personal note, I own a SIG P226 Elite, and I found the controls and DA pull to be be easier to reach even with the medium grip.

 I am in love!

Umm so why did they go with the Armalite mags for their AR-10?

I have an Armalite AR-10 and the biggest weakness are the magazines. The mags on my DPMS LR-308 are superior.

I'm more interested in the new 1.1-8 Leupold scope mounted on that gun.

Sorry. Haven't had enough time to spend much time on the forum. The glass seems really clear and eye relief is generous. The illumination is very bright and it seems that it would be a good daylight scope at 1.1x. Leupold didn't give any clear release date or price point. There were several of these scopes at SHOT and we were told they were all prototypes.

I don't have the pamphlet right now, but the models shown appeared to intended for .308/7.62 NATO platforms, using a Horus reticle.

I try to post more when I get home if anyone is interested later.

Looks like an awesome optic

But if the MSRP really is $2600US :(

We had a discussion with Leupold rep at the show. The scope is in development stage so a price is not set yet. When they asked us what we think the price should be, we told them it should be about 1200USD.......i
