    SHOT SHOW 2011 - Blackhorn 209

I wandered into the Western Powders booth at shot, and I'm not really sure how, but we ended up with an in depth interview on Blackhorn 209.

The powder is a Black power substitute, suitable for inline muzzle loaders, and cartridge guns.

    CANADIAN MADE

    It's claims are:
Lowest standard deviation in the industry
Consistently higher velocities with peak accuracy
    Repeatable results.
Non Corrosive and low residue. (They still recommend you not leave your barrel uncleaned after the match)
No 'crud ring' to distort sabots etc
    No swabbing between shots
Easy breech plug removal (less residue on the plug)
Standard 209 primers are all that is required. Special Muzzle loading 209's are not recommended, and may not work as well as standard primers.
    Temperature stable, non hygroscopic
    Uniform grain size
Clean up with standard oil based cleaning solvents, NOT water.

Below is a pic of recommended breech plug designs.
The one plug by itself is the not recommended design,
Apparently there is an ignition issue with that design.

Not sure what happened to my pic, it's just gone, but you can get info from the website.

That's what I told the guy at the booth, it's hard to find up here.
He says "that's funny, it's made in Canada"

Best stuff I have used yet. Almost no residue between shots. One could easily shoot multiple rounds and have no problem reloading.

The crud ring only happens with 777 (sugar based) and the powerful 209 primer. If you must use 777 there are ways to try to reduce this problem. www.blackpowderbullets.com will be of some help with these primer issues.

I have tried most and now will stay with Blackhorn until it gets bested.

ps. It is hard to find in Canada, when I have seen it is was $65/10ozs compared to $30/10ozs in the US ??? Made in Canada??(I know it is) Why then twice the price?!?!
Nothing makes me madder than paying more up here for our own products.

What I suggest is that you contact a few distributors, and see if they will pick it up.

I asked about this propellant in a thread in the BP forum and only 1 fella had any and had yet to try it out.
Thank you for the first hand feedback Pimhead.
It is supposed to work very well in BP cartridge irons as well and that is my interest.

Tried most blackpowders and 209 is what I stick with. Bought mine at TNT in Regina, can't remember the price. Sure don't miss swabbing and the "crud" ring.

There was an article on Blackhorn 209 in a recent Handloader magazine. It was tried in a few revolver and rifle cartirdges.
