Anyone using a 0.936" Gas block and have good clearance with their hand guards? I am building an ATRS NR rifle and really want to use the 19" IBI Barrel, however it utilizes a 0.936" Gas Block. I have came across some low profile gas blocks in that size and I'd ideally like to use the Maple Ridge V1 17" Hand Guard to fully cover the gas block if its possible.

I spoke with Maple Ridge Armoury and they said the inside dimensions of their hand guard are 1.24" diagonally, 1.75 Inches bottom to top inside the channel and 1.36 inch diameter across. Some of the low profile gas blocks I have found, like the Superlative Arms Adjustable look like they may fit, but it depends where the barrel ultimately sits within the hand guard.

I guess I could go with a low pro non adjustable as well, I just want to know if anyone else has had luck with 0.936 gas blocks clearing their hand guards as I don't want an exposed build.

I can not figure out why a company would put a .936" gas block on a lighter profile barrel. And IBI isn't the only one who does it. IMHO the gas block should be the smallest size possible according to the barrel diameter.

The .936" gas block is going to have minimal to no clearance inside most slim handguards. The gas block and handguard coming into contact during firing isn't something you want happening if you are chasing any amount of accuracy.

I would suggest running a 12" or 12.5" handguard and exposed gas block.

Or get a 15" tubular handguard like the JP Enterprises and have lots of clearance. Despite it having a larger diameter it does feel really good in the hand. You just can't mount a bunch of crap on it if you're into that kinda thing.

Midwest Industries also makes a handguard with a large diameter. I think it's called a suppressor model or something like that. It's designed for a suppressor to fit inside so there will be no gas block contact issue with your barrel. But once again it's a fat handguard like the JP. The MI handguard does still allow you to mount a bunch of crap to it though.

I know, probably not the answers you're looking for but it might help if your search leaves you empty handed.

BTW I have a BSF barrel with a .875" gas block (Superlative Arms adj.) and I replaced the 14" handguard with a 12" due to clearance issues. Was getting fliers with the 14" but now that the gas block is exposed and there is no chance of contact the fliers have disappeared.

I had the same IBI barrel and a early BSF that was .0936. I would doubt the maple ridge handguard would fit. I tried using a .936 superlative arms adjustable gas block and it was touching on my lancer LCH5 handguard(1.7 ID). I ended up using a non adjustable SLR mico gas block. I suspect you may not even fit a non adjustable in that Maple ridge armoury handgaurd. That's the big downside of these .936 barrels, you're pretty much stuck running suppressor ready handguards to clear a gas block.

Does anyone know why barrel manufacturers do this?

And could I bring it to a machine shop and have the gas journal turned down to .875 or less?

Thanks for the quick replies. If this is the case I may go with the 20" Faxon Heavy Fluted or IBI's 20" HBAR. They both use 0.75" gas blocks, only issue with IBI's 20" is the weight is over 3 lbs I think.

I've just heard really good things about the 19" but I really would prefer a covered gas block.
