Hello, Im looking at getting some bases for a rifle, what are the pros and cons of 0 vs. 20 MOA bases? Is 0 MOA better for flatter shooting rifles?

What would be better for a target rifle and for something like a 30-06 or .303?

Does it make that much difference between the two?

Thanks!

It really depends on the range you are shooting and the amount of adjustment your scope offers. For example, I think a F/TR 308 would need something like 30 minutes at 1000 yds. If your scope has 120MOA of elevation, then you are probably fine. If a scope on that same rifle has only 40 MOA of elevation, you may want to put on a base with some elevation built in to make up for it.

Really the only disadvantage is that if you put a base on with too much elevation built in, you might not be able to dial your scope low enough to zero it at 100 yds, for example.

In my opinion there is rarely a reason to ever mount 0 MOA mounts or bases. If you want to cheap out, thats fine, but I find the cost difference is negligible.

I agree with south paw, but go one further.

Mount your scope with standard zero MOA bases. Zero at 100 yards. Now wind your scope all the way down until it bottoms out and count the MOA. For most scopes it would be roughly half of the total elevation travel within the scope. round that number down to the nearest increment of five, and that is the moa that you should put on your bases. That rounding gives you a bit of fudge factor.

That MOA number is the number of unused elevation in your scope, and will never be used in that configuration. Why WOULDN'T you get the correct MOA adjustment to take full advantage of your scope on that rifle.

alright now its staring to make sense. So for my 300wm with a scope with 140 MOA total adjustment, shooting 400-600 yards it probably doesnt matter, but for a .308 or 30-06 shooting targets that far with a scope of 60 MOA adjustment youd want the 20MOA angle on the bases.
