Thought Id share some pics of my 2006 deer hunt. Both of the deer where taken with my Savage 10 ML II.

First whitetail I crept up with 20 yards of his bed and slammed a 250 gr Hornaday SST in his chest whick killed him on spot. Not a great buck but I could not pass him with a muzzleloader plus I hate the cold ;)

Second deer I took was this mulie at about 250 yards. These Savage muzzleloaders are said to be able to take the long shot, and its true they are very flat shooting for a muzzloader and hit hard way out there.

I was hunting on zone 14 near Lumsford Sask in the South Sask river valley and coulees. Incredibly nice people out there who granted me permission on each piece of land I asked to hunt. I was even granted permission to hunt in a pastures full of cattle.

Hi Scott,
Nice bucks! I hope to duplicate your feat in Alberta next month. As someone who hasn't hunted deer on the prairies before, do whitetails and muleys occupy the same habitat or do you find them in different terrain?

They will at times but generally they don't. I hunt alot of coulees and you can find both bedded there during the day. Mornings and evenings they will go there seperate ways.
I have found mulies like the grasslands with lot sof sage brush ect... and the whitetail like slough bottoms, willow thickets and most agricultural areas. It does differ from region to region and am only speaking of the deer I hunt here in the Moose Jaw area but they should behave similar in Alta.

Cheers!!

Thanks for sharing Scott. In my eyes, that whitetail is just as much a trophy as any other deer anyone else will get this year. He is unique and cool. I know it is hard to not say, boy if only he cleared 160.... he is a great trophy!

Beauty Muley too man from classic hunting territory. I bet you have some great memories to cherish there!

Thanks for the feedback! That is a really nice whitetail with very nice mass and lots of character, particularly with a smokepole...I will not be passing if I see one that nice! I will be MZ hunting here in New Brunswick before I go out west the third week of November. In my setup in the deep woods, I can't shoot further than 60 yds due to tight cover, just a chip shot compared to that long poke on that muley! I'm hoping my T/C omega with barnes 285 grain sabots will put him down in a pile. Seems like your Savage did a pretty fine job. But I'm taking my .270 win Tikka to Alberta for the long shots! Judging from your pics I might have to shoot 300 yds or more, which is not a problem. I am very confident in my Tikka, which can drive tacks all day.

I'm so pumped, I wish I was going tomorrow:dancingbanana:

Gord, I think you better bring out your 8x68. The Deer out here are nearly indestructable!;) Best of luck on your trip!

Come to think of it Scott, I don't think I've ever seen a 4 point that tight before, around home they would still be a three point. Do you see alot of those genetics in that area?
