I'm looking for a general purpose scope. I don't know much about scopes, so anything you can educate me on is appreciated. This scope will be primarily for mounting on an M305 I'm building.

Right now I just target shoot for fun. ORA service rifle matches intrigue me, and I'd like to take this rifle hunting in the future.

Anyway, I'm new, a newb some would call me. I'm looking for a decently priced scope with good value under $500. 1x - 4x or greater, illuminated would be an asset. Light weight if possible.

What do you guys think is the best value out there?
Hi Lux Optics CMR Illuminated Ranging Reticle 1- 4x24 gets good reviews, but that's towards the top of the price range. That scope is the sort of thing I'm looking for.

Thanks, looking forward to hearing your replies.

What does everyone think of the Bushnell Elite 6500 1.25 - 8x scope? Non illuminated, but there is an insane deal on right now for them. That is, if they're worth the $600 usually charged for them.

look for a Trijicon TR21. They are the older version of the TR24. Difference is 1inch tube vs 30mm and 1.25x4 vs 1x4. I have seen them go on the EE for $500 or less. There was a brand new one with the red triangle post that sold last week for $500. I'm also a bit biased towards trijicon as almost all my scopes are trijicon......

I'm planning on a Millet DMS-1. After doing a lot of research I've come to the conclusion that Millet has sold thousands of these scopes across North America and I'm always "googling" the same complaints from the same ppl.....there is seldom anything new....that tells me that the percentage of defects is much lower than we think. I think they are a heckuva reliable piece of kit and can't wait to get one mounted on my M14.

Hi, maybe also look at the Vortex Viper 1-4X24 PST. I shot one last week at the range and it was fantastic! great reticle and illuminated to boot! And for around 500$ and change, plus the lifetime warranty, it's a great deal.

You won't be dissapointed, probobly one of the most all around versatile scopes, great glass and tuff as nails.

Try before you buy.
The eye relief on them is insane....you'll never get it to work mounted in the normal position on the receiver.
It might work in a 'scout rifle' setup where it sits forward of the action.

What's this talk of using the Hi - Lux CMRs BDC reticule with 7.62 nato? Is there a separate scope for 7.62?

"their standard 1-4x CMR scope which is made for rifles chambered in 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington (and can be used with 7.62 NATO or .308 Winchester out to 600 meters)."

I had a brand new Millet 1-4 on my M-14 and it only lasted for 20 rounds. If that is your plan buy one new so you have the warranty.
