1" tube or 30mm ?

Hi,

There should be someone on here that can explain to me the differences in between 1" scope tubes and 30mm ones, is it different quality? Construction? Precision? and why would one be chosen instead of the other?

After Christmas, I hope to buy myself a new one :D and I don't owe any 30mm scope so why would I go for one now?

1" = 25.4mm

30mm allows more room for elevation adjustment, and light transmission. If you can go 30mm, do so, though for general hunting there's no practical difference on say a .270 with a 3-9X. S&B and others have gone even bigger, with S&B now offering using a 34mm tube on the tac models.
 
Ah, I see :cool: good points. .

For target, varmints and/or long range shooting is more practicle if I read you correctly, but what about the light, does it worth it? Isn't the picture clearer or better at all because of more light comming in?

Hey, I am learning, never thought about buying a 30mm scope before yesterday :confused: so keep it comming :cool: ;) .

The 30mm tube does not exackly allow more light! That is actually a function of the lenses in the actual piece that gets adjusted. doesn't matter if its a 30mm or a 1" tube the diameter of the bit that gets moved around inside the tube is the same size therefore the same potential for light. 30mm allows more movement inside the tube therefore more elevation and windage.

The simple reality is that you do not need a 30mm tube unless you are a long range (ie 1000-yard+) competitor or military sniper. As stated above, the only advantage of a 30mm tube is that it allows more internal elevation adjustment (often over 100 minutes).

For shooting inside, say, 800 to 1000 yards, you don't need a 30mm scope.

On the other hand, some entire scope series, like the Leupold Mark4, only come in 30mm. These are heavy-duty sniper scopes, however and are built (and priced) accordingly.
 
I have one scope with a 30mm tube, (and that wasn't why I selected it) while the rest of mine have 1" tubes. The only practical difference I found was that it was a bit of a pain trying to find rings for the 30mm. 1" has been the standard for so long you have a wider choice.

Hard to find rings is also my expreience. In addition, you wouldn't be able to switch scope from one rifle to the next without switching rings as well.

It's now clear and bright :D Knowing a bit more, I think I'm gonna stay with 1", and all shots will be max 200yds, no long range here, plus as Danny Boy mentionned, I'll be able to switch it without rings problems.

Wanna hunt, get a good mid range var. 2x7, 3x9, 2.5 x 10 etc or fixed 4 or 6 (all one inch)
Wanna tgt shoot(f-class), fixed 10 x , or 16 x , 20 maybe. (30mm tube) the old bushnells B&L 10X , not the 3200(its one inch) are very nice.
