Friend of mine asked what type of ammo I use in my Ruger 10/22 rifle. I told him I've always used CCI Stinger since I bought the rifle new a number of years ago. he said that I shouldn't used it for " some reason he couldn't remember". I have used some other different brands in it but for the most part it's been CCI Stinger and fortunately I haven't had any issues to date. In fact it shoots great and is very accurate. So does anyone know of the reason Stinger shouldn't be used?? I'll try to do some searching online here at work until morning when I get home to see if I can find the owners manual to see if it says anything regarding Stinger ammo.

Edit... I just read the owners manual online and it states that Stinger ammo should not be used in the Target and Tactical models due to the Stinger having longer cases and it's possible they can stick in the tighter chambers of these two models. I have the Carbine model.

some guns have chambers where the longer stinger case doesnt fit. that said I have shot thousands of stingers through the 1022 stock barrel without issue. stingers being very accurate is a different question ..

I guess I should have noted I rarely shoot past 40yds in my back yard just target shooting so no idea what the accuracy is like past that but I hope to find out soon enough. What type of 22 ammo is best for accuracy in your rifle?

I have the standard 10/22 carbine as well and over the years I've shot thousands of Stingers through it at gophers without any issues. Like you said, the problem with Stingers and 10/22s is specifically with the target model. If I'm not shooting Stingers, the CCI Mini-Mags also are decent for gophers and provide reasonable accuracy.

Speaking of gophers .... I have 2 in my back yard that have a burrow dug down under the foundation of the old barn on the property I rent. I have to wait till the wifey isn't around to see if I can dispose of them with the 22.

Ruger 10/22 from 2006 - stock boring wood model (was only $209.99!). I have shot over 4000 rounds of Stingers through it over the years. No issues (only 2-6 jams, etc over the years). As others mentioned, Stingers are not known for their accuracy and few would use them for any type of target shooting where accuracy is a consideration. Great for dispatching squirrels and raccoons though. I still have some bricks from way back when and am just letting my kids shoot them at the range for target practice (again, not for accuracy purposes).

What ammo do you find to be the best accuracy in your rifle?

I never tested in the 1022 barrel. since it was somewhat like a shotgun. in my kidd barrel the sk rifle match shoots best. you probably have to test yout each ammo in your barrel and see whats best. it may even change lot to lot though

Personally, I find my 10/22 reliable, but not necessarily as accurate as my bolt actions. But the most accurate ammo I have used in the 10/22 is RWS Target Rifle Sport, SK Flatnose Match, and Eley Tenex.

interesting... Ill have to try some different brands to see what shoots best. Pickins are getting slim on lots of ammo. Gonna pick up some Aquila perhaps tomorrow to start with.

I had a lot of success with a bog-standard 10-22 purchased in Saskatoon in about 1993. Shot lots of gophers with it, took it to NZ, put a silencer on it, shot lots of bunnies and possums, (at night from a vehicle with a spotlight), sold it there. It really liked Ozzie made Winchester subsonic hollowpoint. In Canada I was using federal bulk pack hollowpoints and shooting lots and lots of gophers with it.

If you're looking for primarily hunting style ammo, I really like CCI velocitor 40 grain out of my 10/22 which is an old sporter model from the 70s.

I can usually achieve a 1 shot grouping at 50 yds with 10 rounds. Occasionally I'll have a flyer that will blow the group to 2 inches.

For target ammo the CCI standard velocity gets my vote as it also will be around the 1 inch mark. CCI makes good 22 ammo.
