10/22 barrel change ?

I've been thinking about changing the stock barrel on my 10/22 to a shorter match barrel ... has anyone ordered a McGowan barrel from mystic ? and do they shoot as good as dlask

Have an 18" bull barrel on my bench rig. Shoots better than I can. I also have a .750 contoured dlask, I would put them at around the same quality. Although the bores are supposedly handlanped on the McGowans so they may have the edge there. Haven't shot the dlask for accuracy so anything in that regards would just be speculation on my part. I will say this though, the dlask x-treme chamber is tighter than the bentz on the McGowan, so the possibility of this aiding the dlask in being more accurate is there, I just don't have the barrels to do and apples to apples comparison.
 
thanks Guys ! .. i'm leaning toward the mcgowan ... i've got some shilens on my other centerfire rifles and the hand lapped barrels are totally sweet ... even easier to clean

i'll send him and email and see what he says
 
I have a 16 inch McGowan on my 10/22 , I haven't shot it much but it does seem to like Blazers and CCI standards both were giving me 10 shot groups under 3/4" at 50 yards
 
10 at 3/4 is great ... way better than what i get now !

the shorter barrel would come handy in the bush that i hunt in.. its thick with tag alders and scrub ... if i had a nickel for everytime the barrel has gotten caught on a branch, specially when the gun is slinged on my shoulder ... to be honest, it would be nice to hunt with a 22 pistol like in the states, but the chances of that happening in Canada are zero (its a nice pipe dream )

so it would be nice to have some accuracy and a more compact rifle ... best of both worlds !

What kind of stock do you have on the rifle now?
 
i bought it bout 10years ago...its a stainless 10/22 with a black synthetic stock ... I imagine i'll have to ditch the stock for one with a bigger barrel channel ?
 
Indeed, or you may be able to open the channel out on the old one. check out the picture thread here though, theres some cool builds using a heavy barrel and hogue stocks.
 
I bought an 18" standard contour McGowan 1022 barrel from Mystic and it works great. Out of about 10-12 ammo types that I've tried with it, there are none that group over an inch at 50 yards for 5 shots. Some promo ammo comes in at an inch, some hunting ammo (cci minimag hollows) at 1/2-5/8", some target ammo at just under half to one half. That's using a predator rest, a 5x scope, and a trigger improved by aftermarket sear/hammer combo and over travel control. Also, I can say that the customer service at McGowan and dealing with Jerry is excellent. You can't go wrong with one of these barrels from Mystic Precision.
 
For a hunting rifle the hogue will be great, if your looking for tight groups off the bench, a hogue is not so great. Don't get me wrong it's not terrible, but there is the issue of flex and barrel contact.
