I was thinking of getting a new barrel for my Ruger.... I was looking at the following: Butler Creek Stainless .920 Fluted w/Tri-Port
20" Barrel.... how much of an improvement in accuracy will I get, someone told me as the barrel goes over 18" (these are 20") your velocity decrease is this true? Is it worth the money over the stock barrel? (My is the S/S one)

thanx

tjdrent,

16-18" x .920:
Most of the powder in a rimfire cartridge burns in the first 16" of the barrel. Most rimfire data will show optimal muzzle velocity with a 16" to 18" barrel. A 16-18" flutted bull barrel will reduce weight dramatically in comparison with a 20". When shooting offhand, a 16-18 inch fluted barrel would provide enough weight and accuracy for most anything you want to do.

or

20"(+) x .920"
Now, If your using iron sights, then the longer barrels give you a longer sight radius, which can give you better accuracy, If your using a scope, then the longer barrels give you more weight which helps if your shooting off a bench.

It's up to you to decide what's right for you. If you plan on hunting and carrying your rifle in the bush I'd stay away from a 20" bbl.

As for Butler Creek barrels, they are by far, not the "public's" favorite. In a recent poll on RFC only 34 out of 245 voted for a butler creek barrels... The leader of the poll was GREEN MOUNTAIN barrels with 157 votes, followed by Volquartsen with 50 votes.... I'd consider a green mountain, or Whistle Pig before id buy a butler creek.
