i was just reading a post regarding barrel life, and got to thinking, how many shells would it take to wear out a .22 lr barrel, say a factory compared to a bull barrel, on a ruger 10/22?
any science involved or is it just a best guess kinda thing?

Frankly more .22lr barrels are ruined from poor cleaning technique than from use.

Odds are if treated right, the barrel on your 10/22 will need to be changed by your grandchildren. They don't foul if cleaned properly, and they don't normally get so hot as to erode.

My 10/22 barrel will last forever. simply cause the piece of #### jams constantly.
my cooey single shot has a higher rate of fire. I am eying up a marlin 7000 though

i'm curious because i have 2 i want to try and sell eventually, as theyre just sitting on the bench, and was worried about selling someone a worn out lemon.
but the factory has less than 500 rounds and the bc 20x.920 has maybe 2500-3000 rounds.
they both shot quite well before i went to my current fluted barrel for aesthetics purposes
as soon as i figure out how to sell things(i requested info at FAQ)i'll be posting them
thanks

Interesting as i got a Barrel comeing its outa a Browning 22 semi auto (The type that ejects the cases strait down) The fella selling it to me says it is shot out he just said it looked bad.
I dont think he shoots guns just ended up with some parts
So maby soaking in hoppes #9 and a good cleaning will bring it back up if its just badly leaded,
Maby :D

Holy crap. I have NO idea how many rounds I have through my Butler Creek Carbon Fiber. Since 2000/2001? Thousands and thousands. In the 10's of thousands, easy! Still shoots as good as new! I don't think it's something to worry about. Just don't #### it up by improper cleaning, as noted above.

For the new folks among us who might have missed a few millions posts anyone care to define what Improper cleaning is?

One of the most important things is to protect the muzzle/crown. Grinding your cleaning rod against the rifling and muzzle openning is murder. Just be careful and don't clean like a frustrated Hulk. Proper lubrication and cleaning helps prevent pitting.

i primarily used a boresnake, and on occasion used a coated rod with brass jags, heres some foto's of the crown's, the factory looks weird.

Those two middle ones need some Hoppes bore solvent and a bronze brush scrubbing! :D My barrel gets a pattern like that after about 250 rounds. If that is in the finish... damn weird!
