Has anyone tried to re-barrel a ruger 77/22 with a take-off 10/22 barrel? If so, has anyone machined a longer shank and set back the barrel enough to still allow it to be rechambered with a match chamber? I want to keep the factory look, but also improve accuracy of my77/22.

I originally wanted to re-work my 77/22 barrel with a tighter chamber to improve accuracy. No one here thought it would work. I gather it is possilbe (& worhtwhile) to do this if I can only find a take off 10/22 barrel... and a gunsmith who would do it.

Thanks for your interest.

Even if it's possible, why would you think a stock 10/22 barrel would be more accurate?
Stock 10/22 barrels blow - I doubt rechambering it would make it more accurate anyway.

Maybe I'm missing something...

I have done lots of change overs all you have to do is cut the extractor recess on the other side of the barrel. I have never done a factory blue barrel because who cares. I have done stainless ones and alot of heavy barrels.

canucklehead,

I don't have first hand experience with this idea, but I'd like to improve the accuracy of my stainless 77/22 (and keep the factory look) without having the expense of of buying a new barrel.

I understand from the Rimfire Central forums, that most rugers have a "sport" chamber and that accuracy can be significantly improved by "re-working" the factory barrel to set it back just enough to it be rechambered with a tighter "benz" or with a "match chamber". I gather the factory barrel can be set back up to 0.2 inches and will still fit back together properly by adding a small shim, but no one here has experience.

The RFC shooters say it works wonders for them and that the 10/22 barrel would work too (maybe better). I have a photo showing the differences in these barrels, but I can't post it here. I was hoping someone here had some positive first-hand experience. I can probably find a 10/22 SS take-off barrel, and would give it a try if it is possible.

The 77/22 has alot of features to like, but mine isn't as consistently accurate as my CZ or Rem 541. Thanks for responding.
