I have assembled a few 10/22s over the years, and most were very accurate after simply bolting on a new barrel ,stock, and trigger kit. However the 10/22 that I put together recently was much more of a challenge.I added a Green Mountain barrel,Boyds laminated stock,Power Custom sear/hammer kit, stainless bolt handle, and bolt buffer expecting accuracy to be as good as with previous 10/22s.I was disappointed to discover that most ammunition would do no better than 1" for five shot groups at 50 yards, and 3/4" at best.Last night,I took the gun apart and checked it over closely. What I discovered was that the action was binding in the stock, the receiver bedding area was rough, and that the barrel was barely free of the stock.I cleaned up the stock and action to eliminate the binding.I draw filed the bedding portion of the receiver slightly to true it up,and I relieved the barrel channel so that it floated freely with enough clearance to pass a business card between the barrel and the stock.
I tested the gun this morning, and the accuracy was much better. In fact the Federal Gold Medal load is now averaging just under .600" for five shots at 50 yards.I have bedded many bolt rifles over the years, but I have never seen a 10/22 that was so sensitive to the bedding and stock fit before. If you decide to do your own 10/22 mods, pay special attention to the stock fit and bedding.

I had the exact same problem with a B&C Anschutz stock and a TacSol barrel. I find the TacSol barrel to be even more sensitive to this, being made out of Al.
