I am wondering how far my 10/22 carbine (16.5") will shoot "flat" for with standard Federal bulk ammo.......lets say not worring about wind or anything. Also what is the effective range for it to kill small game, shot placement in mind.

Thanks, UTAF

Although I have hit gophers at 100yds, its pretty rare for me. Its neat to hear the shot and then have time to grab the binoculars before the round hits the dirt.

Bang... ... ... puff! Then the gopher looks around clueless as to where it came from. Five or ten shots later I'll get him.

50 yards is a reasonable shot for the 10/22 and lazy ammo.

"Flat" trajectory on a .22LR isn't very far...

15 to 55 yards with a 50 yard zero gives a fairly flat trajectory, but it starts falling off quickly after that.

Effective range for killing really depends on accuracy. At 300 yards, a typical .22LR projectile will still have around 770 fps. of velocity. Same muzzle velocity as a .22 CB but with a 40 gr. bullet vs. 29 g. That's more than enough to do in a gopher or rabbit. However, most .22LR rigs lack the accuracy to make consistently clean hits even at 100 yards.

50-60 yards would be a reasonable limit for that setup.

max range 22

When shooting gophers I have a 90 percent success rate out to 100m 1st shot but after that the odds start dropping you really have to get out and play with your rig and have fun and chalenge yourself:ar15:

I found my 10/22 was ok out to 100 yards it would wonder and leave big groupings I changed to another gun and the grouping got alot tighter.. dont know i just think it was my 10/22..

Longer barrels and bolt action rifles tend to give smaller groupings. my 1940 marlin 81 with a 24 '' barrel hits great at 100 yards and my Mossberg 144lsb with 27 inch barrel hits awesome at the same distance. I do shoot both guns at gophers out to 200 yards but the kill average drops off. Up to 100 yards, they both are deadly. the Mossberg 152 with the 20 inch barrel is good to 50-60 yards accurately.
