Volquartsen, Green Mountain, ER Shaw, Magnum Research, and a whole slew of others make .17HM2 barrels for the 10/22 - so your biggest problem will be figuring out how much $ to spend
My recipe for the conversion came from a mix of several different ideas
after reading LOTS of posts on rimfirecentral - basically what
I ended up doing was the following:
- Modify a 10/22 magnum cocking handle assembly by turning it down to standard 10/22 length
while keeping the magnum spring on it.
- Purchase & install a power custom extra power hammer spring
- Machine a new Stainless bolt handle & mate it to existing cocking handle
(increases bolt weight by approx 1.6 ounces)
- Install new urethane bolt buffer
Now just as a disclaimer: my rifle is still a work in progress I've had
2 casehead failures during the early testing of my conversion. However this
was in the field hunting gophers, the main problem with the .17 Mach II I've found
is you need to be more attentive to cleaning it then with a .22LR- the failures I experienced
came after firing 40-50 rounds without cleaning.
Running a dry patch through it every 10-20 rounds helps prevent any issues - I haven't experienced a
blown out case since. The S/S bolt handle is a new addition as well, I'm figuring the extra
weight will be an added safety buffer in the event of a string of rapid fire at some poor varmint's head
