I recently did the auto bolt release mod on my 10/22 and it worked great. I then added an extended mag release lever (the inexpensive black plastic type) and now the auto bolt release doesn't work unless I push the black plastic "magazine latch plunger" (#5 in action illustration) in all the way flush to the receiver. Auto bolt release also doesn't always work with the magazine installed, either the stock mag or my BK Steel Lips.

Has this happened before to anyone?
How did you fix it? Is it the extended mag release?
Is whether or not the magazine is installed related to the bolt release? How?

Thanks in advance!

I have the same mag release and did my own auto bolt release by grinding the stock one and it works everytime. Make sure it's all back together properly, good luck.

You could also get an Ironwood Designs mag release/hold open; with these, you pull the lever back to hold the bolt open, and push it forward to drop the mag. A very slick design that works very well, and it's too bad his stocks are considered "bullpups".

I had same problem with same set up . The auto release rubs against the spring plunger device that holds mag in place. I went back to stock mag release and auto release works fine. Threw the cheap black plastic mag release into parts box.:( Might try another make one day.

Stock mag release is so ... ug. The spring I was referring to is 20A on the diagram, I had trouble with this the first time I took it apart.

Well, I just got back in from my shop and it looks like I got it fixed.
Good call, tonyg, the mag release was the problem. I reinstalled the factory release and the auto bolt release works fine.
That'll teach me to buy the cheap crap! Back to Bits of Pieces to exchange it for the $25 mag release.:sniper:

I have one x. Its a must for me. It took me hours with a small file to modify all my other mags to work with the bolt stop. CST supplies one modified factory Ruger 10rd mag with the kit. I just copied to cutout that they did to the back of the mag.

Works great.....fairly easy to install.

Got the same problem this week. Dremelled a small bit of plastic on the left side of the extended mag release so it does not get in the way of the bolt release. Problem solved.

Absolutely right, velocipede!

I reinstalled the extended mag release and took a closer look and saw where the bolt release lever was being obstructed. I dremelled off the piece that was blocking the bolt release lever and it now works perfectly!

Thanks!! :dancingbanana:

Hello

I am having the same problem, installed the plastic extended mag release
then the auto bolt release and the auto release does not work.
Do any of you guys have pics of what you had to modify to make this work?
If i just buy the metal extended mag release will that solve my problem?

Thank you,:bangHead:

Speedbird,
Take a close look at the left side of the (installed) plastic mag release; you will see where the metal bolt release button is touching the mag release and stopping the bolt release from moving forward, which it needs to do to let auto bolt work. That is the area of the mag release you need to dremel off. Not much materiel needs to be removed, maybe 2 or 3 millimeters at the most, just enough so it doesn't obstruct the bolt release and allows it to move forward freely as you pull the bolt lever.

I will try and take some pics today but the piece is really small and it's difficult to show it in any detail. (With my camera, anyway!)
