10/22 extractor and/or mag jam

I have an almost stock 10/22. I shot about 300 rnds tonight using a BC steel lips mag. The first few rounds usually jammed by double feeding. After the first problem few, the remainder of the mag was usually ok.

Is the an extractor problem or a mag problem? What's the advantage to upgrading to an aftermarket extractor?

I'd start out by cleaning the bolt thoroughly, including removing the extractor and cleaning in the groove. Also try different brands of ammo. Also, a new mag may need some "break in". My steel lips mag got more reliable with use. It may be an issue of the spring and following in the mag loosening up with use.

Ruger factory 10/22 extractors are made from stamped steel and the edge will roll over with little use pretty quick and cause extraction problems. I think the titanium aftermarket ones have the same problem too.

Aftermarket extractors are usually made of hardened A2 tool steel using electrical discharge machining for tighter tolerances and much harder RC, (60 RC I think). These will hold their edge for much, much longer.

I use several of the very earlier steel lipped BC mags and I've NEVER had feeding issues, but I installed a Volquartsen tool steel extractor on my 10/22s. Among others, it's one of the parts everyone should replace on a new 10/22 and never worry about it again.

I seem to recall there was a later batch of BC steel lips mags that caused feeding issues a short while ago. Not sure what the issue was, or the solution. Or were they the plastic lipped ones.
 
My experience with BC mags and the 10/22 started out poorly. There were many FTF's, stove pipes and FTE's. I was ready to toss the BC mags. After I put about 1000 rounds through the rifle I have not had any problems with it or the BC mags. I have found that there are picky about how the mags get inserted into the rifle. If I here a definite click I never have a problem.

In my case I think part of the problem was the user because of how new I am to the shooting sports.
