10/22 front sight removal question...

I know you can remove the front sight, as it is a dove tail sort of arrangement. However, is there any way to knock off the pedestal the frontsight sits in? Or is that just a meatier (fatter) part of the barrel that the dove tail is cut into?

It is part of the barrel, but it can removed fairly easy with the use of a lathe.
