hey I know that my 10/22 will like different kinds of ammo and I should try all types( I have) but I thought winchester 333 rounds were fine. SO I'm out at the pits shooting and I get this about 1-2 times per 25 round steel lips BC mag.

Do most people take apart the bolt assembly to clean it? As in the extractor and firing pin springs etc?

It's so odd, the gun has about 1000 through, but I have never seen this at the range and I keep the gun clean. Now i'm thinking I should break down the bolt assembly to clean that

You may want to try a VQ extractor? :)

ah I got it finally, thank you for the pm jt

ah the mags have had about 7-9 hundred through already, but I'm going to give them a cleaning anyway

if a total disassemble and cleaning of the bolt doesn't work vq extractor it is

No problem.

I would definitely go with an aftermarket extractor to try to solve that problem. Or you can just take a file to the stock one (extractor) and make a more defined point to it if you don't want to put any money into upgrades. But I would recommend spending the $20 on a Kidd or Volquartzen one. Just remember to use the spring that came with the rifle and not the one that they send you with the new extractor. There have been posts about the aftermarket springs being to soft.

on my old 10/22, i did all sorts of upgrades and it would still constantly jam, so what i did was only used the factory 10 rounder mag's and it cleared up all my jam issues :)

If its a newer 1022 with the powder coat finish on the receiver have a look in side by removing the trigger group to see if the bolt may be draging .I had one and this was the problem polished the in side of the receiver with a dremel tool.after that it would even cycle cci sub sonics.

You have to remember that you are using cheap bulk ammo and it may not all be loaded identical...some over powdered ..some under....it looks like the "pinched" casing may be from an over loaded cart and the bolt cycled too fast and caught it before it cleared. One of my Mossberg does this occasionally. If the empty casings are all being pulled from the chamber, then the extractor is working fine. The ejector may be the problem. But I imagine the problem may lay with powder load.

try different ammo and see what the results are , also the VQ extractor will only do good things too.......... it is worth the $10-$15

I have the exact same problem with my 10/22. It has an enhanced extractor, and with cci mini mags seems to cycle fine (hit and miss with many other types of ammo), but it will not take the steel lips mags. In fact comparing the steel lips to the factory one, they were shorter in the body by about .1" making for a lot of slop. Maybe mine was a dud, but I deep sixed er and bought two more factory mags.

Hi Cocksure, you're totally right -there is slop in the Butler creek mags and I did notice it. Now i see it might be an issue

First I am going to file the extractor and give it's channel a good cleaning- next the VQ extractor will be tried

it's so cool that I had a problem and people are actually helping me, in my life I'm usually the helper or one who helps

hey guys, this was my first thread, and I'm humbled that I got such good advice

thank you

If you have a VQ. Just toss the old one and install the new one. The VQ has nice sharp point to it so it really grabs hold of the rim of the case. If you do file the OEM one, don't take off the point or it may not grab at all. If you do, I do believe I have my original one that you can have if you wreck it :D :p

Check the sticky on the butler creek mags, there's a spot you may have to file a bit to get them to work better.
As far as the stovepipe goes, I'd go with the VQ extractor.

I'm currently running a TacSol barrel and a VQ extractor. I have the same problem with my 10/22 every now and then. I find that the issue isnt with the ammo or the gun, but with the BC steel lips. For some reason I only get this problem every 20 rounds or so when the BC mags are stacked together and loaded onto the 10/22. Loading one mag by itself solved my problems.

Hey I found out what it was, it was crud lining where the round seats in the bolt. My stiff brush wasn't cleaning it out, and I had to run the side of a screwdriver in there and out popped a lining of stuff. Seems like the round can mate better with the ejector and do it's job properly. Works like a charm now
