Hey how's it going CGN'ers?

So I was just doing some polishing and cleaning of my 10/22 bolt etc. And having recently bought a digital caliper (home depot "Procise" brand) and having done a bit of reading about head spacing, I decided to take a jab at it. This is the guide that I was using:

http://www.perfectunion.com/vb/ruger-10-22/40048-headspace-your-bolt.html

So I measured what the current headspacing was, and after a few tries I decided that the most frequent measurement I was getting was .046. I noticed firstly that my factory headspacing was considerably different from .055 (guy who wrote the guide aboves bolt). Anyway so he says the objective is to achieve .0425, and that any smaller than that and you will likely have ram fires.

It seems a bit strange though because I took a few samples of rims, just using the calipers OD measurement (maybe that's not a reliable technique for measuring the rim thickness?), and what I found was that Dynapoints had rim thicknesses of anywhere from .038 all the way to .046, and Federal American Eagles (my ammo of choice) were a bit more consistent and ranged from .043-.046.

Finally, to the point and question: is .0425 too small of a rim space? Logically it would seem to lead to slam fires if I'm finding a lot of rim thicknesses around .045-46. Unless you're aiming to make the headspacing slightly smaller than the thickness of the rim??

Anyway I just did a quick polish while I had the extractor and firing pin out, and took it down .001 to .045. I know this probably won't make a huge difference if any difference at all but I just wanted to square and smooth it, and make it all pretty. I definitely don't want to destroy my bolt and have to do all that polishing all over again!

I'd just like a bit of feedback from anyone who has a bit of experience with this sort of thing so that I can make a good decision.

Cheers!
Fred
