My 10/22 doesn't seem to like to hold zero very well. I'd like to know what you guys think:

-is it my scope?
-is it my base?
-is it something else?

The 10/22 in question started life as a Target model but was transformed into a "tacti-cool"ish kinda rig. It now sports a 16" Carbine barrel (that is actually quite accurate given the right ammo), a Bushnell 1.5-4.5x32 scope, and a scope base that came with the rifle. No idea of make or model. It may well be the factory original, but I doubt it as only three screw holes line up.

Bear in mind that I am using the same ammo between shooting sessions; so ammo is not a factor.

What happens is, I will sight in the rifle to hit dead on at 50 yds., enjoy a few hours of shooting, pack up, go home, clean out the bolt area above the mag, run a boresnake through it a few times and put it away. The next time I go to the range, I have to re-sight it in. It is not consistently high, low, left or right, it is just off in a different direction each time, usually by about an inch or so.

Any thoughts?

Matthew

I'd get a new scope base. Should have 4 screws, this one just might "conveniently" fit and may have some play in it.

I bought a PC base from hawk-tech, very happy with it, and I'd recommend getting one.

Comes in silver or black, comes with screws and a lil wrench. The base is a good place to start.

Ditto on the PC base. The Ruger factory item doesn't have much depth to the rail and the surfaces are not machined. Your rings don't have much to grip and are probably moving around, perhaps even from the ride home.

My Mueller APV stays put on the PC base with no need to re-zero.

Also are you using weaver rings? I had some dovetail rings and they were not working on the ruger base, was getting movement all over the place. Went to weaver and never had a single problem and this is with the stock mount.

Another thing to try is shake the gun.. For me it was the base that wasnt sitting right I simple unscrewed it pushed it back to the back of the gun stock then screwed the screw back in and after doing that the accrecy went from almost random to dead on..

Try beding the stock if the gun is lose it will have problems zero as the gun moves when fired.. so zero changes every shot.. For me I could shake the gun with the stock plastic stock and the gun would flap around had to put presure on it when I added the screw and now its snug.. I replaced the stock and the one I got it was hard to put the gun in it but Then I added the screw just to hold it so It should do really well..

Just shake the gun then hold the scope and shake it and see if it feels diffrent if it feels solid when holding the scope its the stock is lose if it shakes when you holding the scope its the base mounted to the gun or.. the scope rings..

Frist problem I had with my 10 22 was lose base took it off and reattached it fixed it..

Second was Lost scope rings bought new ones

third was the stock didnt fit together properly so it would be assembled and lose would move around fixed it by puting presure on the reciver and then screwing it in

Fourth was The scope base on the gun would come lose after shooting I took it off and remounted it hasnt come lose after 3000 rounds..

its going to be 1 of thouse or even all of them..

If its none of them its a cheap scope not holding zero.. Just shake the gun and see if it feels like its flopting all over the place..

Well everything is tight on the rifle and loc-tite was used on all the screws. And I am using Weaver rings. The base is not loose as far as I can tell, but it does flex quite easily with minimal pressure. I'm thinking that I'll just a new, better quality base for it. That PC one posted above looks nice.

As for bedding, it sits in its stock quite tight. I had to modify it slightly when I first got it so that it would, so that was a good idea. Just not the problem. :)

Hopefully the new base will solve the problem... if not, I guess it's time a for a new scope.

Thanks all!

Matthew
