I just wanted to ask what you can do to improve a 10/22 at home on the "cheap". I made a mag release extension using some marine epoxy and did a little bit of smoothing/buffering of the trigger parts but was afraid I might wreck the sear angles so it was only minimal.

Suggestions?

Not much you can do at home. A decent 2.5 pound crisp trigger is a $75 job and is not done easily. You can buy trigger parts and replace the factory parts but I have found they don't do the job as well as a skillful trigger alteration.

- install a bolt buffer ($5)
- create an auto bolt release (free)
- install volquartsen extractor ($20)
- trigger can be greatly improved just by taking a very small amount of lip off the hammer where it connects to the sear. You can create a very light, safe trigger if you take your time and test it. (free)
- some folks get better accuracy by removing the barrel band (free)

Well, assuming that your time is "free", you could

1. free-float the barrel (sand paper and a dowel)
2. pillar bed the stock (lamp rod and jb-weld, <$20)
3. drill a hole for a cleaning rod in the back of the receiver
4. install Uncle-Mikes studs and sling swivels (<$20)
5. lock-tight the sight rail and screws to the receiver (<$5)

I did most if not all the tips and tricks layed out at www.rimfirecentral.com and so far I have a 2.5 trigger that is holding up. My accuracy got only slightly better but I only use my 10-22 for grouse and small game so for me 10 rounds under an inch at 25yds is just fine.
