I have a Ruger Lasermax 10/22 that I rarely use. The laser dot can't be seen in sunlight much over 20 yards and the iron sights were way,way off to the left as they came from the factory. I tried drifting the rear sight but it's still not great.

My thought now is to buy a scope.

So, what would be a decent (cheap) scope for casual range/plinking use? What should I expect to pay (mounted and bore sighted)?

I read somewhere that the rail supplied with the gun isn't the best. Should I include an aftermarket rail in the cost estimate?

Thanks for the help

With scopes, you get what you pay for. Think about what kind of distances you're shooting at, the amount of available light you hope to be shooting in, and how good your eyes are. Also, make sure you consider buying a scope that's designed for rimfire guns, with parallax set to approx 50 yards or else an adjustable objective which let's you set the parallax. Let Google help you understand why considering parallax is important on a 22.

The supplied rail works if using rings designed for a weaver style rail. Picatinny rings won't fit right. So, if using picatinny rings, get a picatinny rail.

I bought a Simmons .22 4X fixed and love it. I have it on my 10/22 anniversary edition. Holds zero. Adjustments are accurate and glass is clearer than my 3X9 Bushnell. I 100% recommend a Simmons. And its only $50 to boot.

I would also recommend getting a picatinny rail for it.
