10/22 Problem

Hey Nutz,

I just got back from the range to shoot my 10/22. I went through about 100 rounds, loaded up another mag and then shot a few. Instead of nice neat little 22 hole there were huge rectangle shaped holes  I packed up and left cause I was worried about hurting my barrel anymore...

I had recently cleaned it with my otis and then tried to run a bore snake through it. I couldn't then, or now, get the brass weight of the bore snake through the barrel. Coming in from the action it got stuck a couple inches in. I didn't want to force it so I took it out and now its packed up.

Whats going on here? Is the barrel effed? Do i need to take her to the gunsmith?

Sounds like there is something wrong with your barrel, I'm not sure it can be fixed, luckily Dlask sells nice 10/22 barrels.

Sounds like a restriction has built up in the barrel. You need to dissolve or brush it out. I've never had lead or copper build up like that, so I can't say what chemical works best. Put a light in the open action and look down the barrel. See what you see.

I've got a 10/22 barrel low mileage I may be will to part with depending on what's it's worth. No gunsmith required. I swapped barrels, very easy...

Thanks for the input. Im going to take the barrel off the receiver and look in through the breach end... I've looked through the muzzle end and it looks like there might be a bit of build up but I've cleaned it pretty throughly.

If I cant figure it out I'll definitely PM you and set something up. Thanks :)

If you can't get the brass end of the bore snake through, it needs more cleaning. You need to see smooth riflings all the way from breech to muzzle. Anything built up that damages the bullets up to pass through is going to be problems.

Remove the barel and clean from the breech end less chance of damageing the muzzel crown.plug the muzzel with a roll up ear plug and fill the bore with solvent and let it soak befor scurbing with a bore brush.

Keyholing is a rifling issue, or lack of, presuming the ammo is updotate.
Scrub and inspect the bore, try a different type of RF, post results.
WRXW.

Sounds like some serious lead build up. Not sure why it happens but I've seen a .22 seem to suddenly lead up really bad in just a few rounds. Bad bullet or some weird thing.

Leave the bore snake thing in the box, find a good rod and scrub out all the lead with a stiff brush and tight patches. Looking through it will help figure out whats going on in there. Really doubt that there is anything wrong with the barrel.

I shoot two 10/22's and clean the BBL with more than 1500 to 2500 rounds between cleanings. 22 RF ammo is not going very fast so should not lead up to any extent.
I only use snakes with some solvent at front and a little oil at the back end.
One of them must have close to 8-10000 round through and other than the trigger guard retain pins becoming loose no problems with accuracy.
Something is very strange?
Have you had the BBL off if so check the vblock it may be loose.
Good Luck
Don

Best ammo I have found for these are American Eagle HP's
