10/22 Problems: 1) Sticky Mags and 2) Misfires with VQ Hammer

Hey everyone,
I was at the range today shooting my scoped 10/22.

Recently I put a number of VQ parts into it, including: Buffer, Extractor, Hammer (with springs), Takedown Screw, Extended Mag Release, and Auto Bolt Release. Today I had some small trouble with two areas.

1) The factory mags have always been a little tough to get out of this gun. With the old-style non-extended mag release, they came out easily enough when I put my thumb on the rear (bottom) lip of the mag to pull it out while simultaneously pressing the mag release. With the extended release I can't get my thumb there, so it's tough to get the mag out. Grabbing it by the front lip doesn't help.

Is there any way to make it easier to take the mag out? I couldn't find anything in the 10/22 tips and tricks sticky on this. For now I've put the old style mag release back in to make my life easier. I suppose I could look for some 10 rnd BC mags.

2) The VQ hammer came with a hammer spring, which I installed with the hammer. Today I was shooting Dynapoints and had about 1 in 15 rounds misfire. Before the Dynapoints (same box) had always proven reliable. I've read that the VQ hammer spring is weaker than the stock one, so for now I've put the stock spring back in the gun. The trigger still seems nice; it's hard to tell but maybe it was a tad bit lighter with the VQ spring.

Anyone else experience this problem?

Thanks for any comments you might have!

I bought the whole VQ trigger group and housing, just love it. My mag drops freely. I suspect that the button that locks the mag into place is not free to travel completly, try taking it apart and putting it back together again, the spring might be stuck on it. I see we both like the Hogue stock, although mine is OD.

All springs, the most noticeable was using the original spring with the Volq extractor. Stock springs were created to perform at optimal levels with the rifle. Try putting it back in and see how it functions.

Yeah I noticed when I was installing the VQ extractor that the VQ spring seemed too short to even sufficiently tension the extractor. I just used the longer stock one.

Right now the only VQ spring in my two 10/22s is the trigger reset spring. I'll put the stock spring back into both tonight.

The button that locks the mag in place does move freely, with either the stock or aftermarket mag release. I think the problem has something to do with how the mag contacts the magwell in the gun. Maybe it's sticking because some of the paint inside the magwell has flaked off (as is its wont).

Update, I worked on my 10/22s tonight.

1) The VQ trigger reset spring is longer than the stock one. Seems a little stronger too, so I'm going to leave it in my 10/22s. All other springs in my rifles are stock.

2) I think I've found a solution to the sticky mag situation. The gun holds the mag by the mag's front and rear protrusions. The rear is held by the mag button, and the front is held in an indent in the receiver. The indent was very dirty in my gun (gun's gotta be at least 8k rounds old), so I cleaned it and now the mags seem to drop more freely.

I'm guessing the front indent got so full of crud that it was helping to hold the mag in.

I actually had to put my stock trigger reset spring back in as the VQ one wasn't strong enough to reset the trigger. I had to manually push the trigger forward after every shot...

I just posted tonight in the 10/22 Tips on the mag issue, Happy Shooting.

Sticky mags?

I agree using the stock springs when you install some of the aftermarket parts, but here is my solution for mags that stick and don't fall out freely.

Magpul Glock Speedpuls and some JB Weld :D

I seen another member do this and so far it works great. It gives you something to grab onto to "help" it out if it doesn't just fall out.

Thanks for the advice booter and jt trouble. For now, I find that with the non-extended mag release, I can take the mags out through pushing up on the mag release while simultaneously levering the bottom rear of the mag to get the mag out of the mag well. However, booter your suggestion of smoothing the sides of the mags seems worthwhile for a future Sunday afternoon.

I find with using this style of lower lever mag release, all I have to do is push it down with my baby finger (On my trigger hand) and the mag drops right out.
It basically makes it a simple one hand operation....
