I picked up a used Ruger 10/22. Took it out to fire some ammo. It was not cycling properly. I fired 30 shots all together, first 20 gave me problems, loaded another 10 jammed only once.

Im thinking.

- Ammo was really old, some 15 years old the remaining at least 10 years old.
- Mag needs to be cleaned
- Gun needs to be cleaned
- Gun was a dud and that is why it was for sale?
- shots that I did take were accurate.

ALso I saw that you should not use Stingers, which I did not. How about shorts?

Thanks

Dan

clean it
lube it
run it
if it still don't work
sell it
was it a factory mag, or after market? if after market load only 25 rounds see if that helps

a good part of that can be blamed on the ammo- and a good cleaning-the fact that you got a string of 10 = that there's really nothing wrong with the gun- even out of a FRESH brick of 550 you usually get about 10 ftfs somewhere down near the bottom- as to stingers, it's probably due to the lighter bullet ( never had the MONEY to try them myself) as to shorts, it's be/c there's not enough recoil to make the bolt go all the way back- most, if not all semi-automatics are long rifle only- unless they're set up for it, like the nylon 66 gallery specials

There are a couple of questions to ask prior to helping you

How old is the 10/22? has it been broken in? is it just failing to feed or is it stove piping as well? is it completely clean/lubricated? stock magazine or aftermarket?

Ok here it goes, my 10/22 is sooo fussy, it needs to be thoroughly cleaned and lubed after every outing, it takes atleast 500 rounds for the gun to start breaking in and paint paint/blueing to come off on the inside, the internals were polished and it now cycles perfectly with any/every ammo, it was stove piping and a volquestrian extractor solved those problems, the stock mag feeds perfectly the 25 round buttler creek works perfectly now after the 90 degree edge on the steel lips smoothed out.

I have had 3 10/22's now and everyone of them was really fussy until they were broken in. You just need some time and patience and it will all smooth out in the end, no pun intended.

give it some love before you sell it!

Stingers cant be used in TARGET 10/22s due to the Chamber as the target barrels have a Target Chamber cut in them . The Stinger Case it a bit longer than regular 22lr shells and dosent fit in the chamber due to the tolerences.

PG.14 of the manual
NOTE: The following warning applies to RUGER® 10/22 Target rifles only:
“Stinger” cartridges have a longer case
than 22 LR cartridges loaded to U.S.
Industry specifications. They can stick
in the tighter chambers of target rifles,
including the Ruger 10/22 Target Rifle,
which can result in a hazardous
ruptured case and release of hot
powder gasses and brass when fired.
DO NOT USE
“STINGER” AMMUNITION IN
10/22 TARGET RIFLES

I have to use lead nosed in mine. make sure the guide rod is lubed. I do that it works like a dream for at least 700 rounds.

Usually semi 22`s will run better when you keep them dry , I would avoid lubing the guide rod or anything in the action unless useing a dry lube . Rimfire rounds are dirty ,add lube = Gummy action ,might be the reason it only works for a dream for 700 rounds ..............

oh man this thing is starting to sound like a high maintenance riffle!!! Crap, I pcked it up used no idea how old it is. What is stove pipping?

Dan

I suspect the mag just needs breaking in. The springs in the mags are usually really tight, and so when they are really full they don't feed reliably at first. Run them with 10 rounds for a few hundred, then switch to 15, then 20, then 25.

You will

never find a semi auto that does not require some maintenance.....

That is why I sold mine. It shot very well and functioned well after I did all the work that could be done to it.

There is nothing like a bolt action in the accuracy department as well.
