10/22 shorty barrel to free float?

Have a Dlask receiver with an 8 inch dlask bull barrel that I'm mounting in cut down birch 10/22 factory stock with Kidd single stage trigger .Will be 26 3/4 inches overall. My shorty 10/22 build

Barrel is right up against wood in barrel channel all the way down the monster 8 inch barrel...lol

My question is should i try and free float barrel by sanding or leave it alone? If I try and free float what technique should I use to sand down barrel channel? Yet to cut down stock in picture below but gives you idea of how barrel sits

Float the barrel.

A piece of coarse sandpaper on a long socket of the right diameter will be fast.

When done, rub some tung oil or linseed oil in there to seal it up.

I used a cut off price from a broom handle, wrapped 80 grit around it and went to town.

I’d try shooting it first and if it’s accurate to your standards, well leave it alone.

ive got the same set up, Dlask receiver and 8" barrel, mine is on a Boyd evolution stock, so the barrel is free floated just by the nature of that stock.
would highly recommend free floating it.
