10/22 Steel firing pins

I find that on occasion I have some ammo that miss fires alot and saw you can buy a heavier steel firing pin. Has anyone installed one and noticed a big difference? Thinking of adding one on my Hawktech order.

I would think it would probley help.but I also think it probley has more to do with the quality of the ammo is question.(ie poor priming in the rim of the case)

It is rarely the firing pin, if ever that causes miss fires. Sometimes ammunition, but also check the bolt face as carbon will build up in the recess that the rim of the cartridge fits in and often has to be scrapped out to get out the build up of carbon. Phil.

That said......I've often wondered why certain bolt-actions will "chew-through" ammo that the semi's cannot...........ok, ok, it's the nature of the action....

You obviously haven't tried a Gevarm semi auto.

aftermarket firing pins.

On one of my 10/22s I had common ftf and narrowed it down to the firing pin making a weak indentation. When I took the bolt out, I noticed that the pin didn't come out very far from the bolt, i.e. it was a little on the short side. After a change to an aftermarket firing pin, which did stick out farther, the problem disappeared. I suspect that ruger uses relatively soft material for the extractor and firing pin and that in time, some rounding occurs, resulting in less reliability. I still have the old firing pin and can measure it's overall length if you want to compare.

Among the things mentioned I find that the head space is excessive on most 10/22's and when you have a tight or dirty chamber the shell isn't against the barrel, and sometimes this absorbs the firing pin hit just enough. and the firing pin profile may be a bit wider than it needs to be at the tip.
