I have a line on a VQ 17 HM2 (not HMR) 10/22 conversion barrel. I have spent the better part of the day searching here and RFC and have read every post I could find. I already have a CZ 452 and a HB Marlin as well as plenty of ammo stocked up. Also have a 10/22 waiting for modifications. Not really looking for a debate on ammo, caliber and platform.

As I understand it there are 3 options I can go with. One is to source a Ruger 10/22 magnum bolt handle and recoil spring. Anyone know where I might find one of these in Canada? Cost?

The other is to order a 10/22 Power Custom bolt handle for .17 conversion from Brownells for $55 US plus all other costs.

Last I understand Wolff makes 10/22 magnum std recoil spring and 10/22 XP (extra power) hammer spring both should be about $20 US plus.. Anyone know where I might find these in Canada?

Looking to hear from others who have successfully made this conversion. Any recommendations you might have? Anything to avoid? Which of these 3 options would you suggest?

Any useful input greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Shawn are they working well for you? No kaboom's?

I can get the charging handle out of Brownells but not the Wolff springs. Some on RFC are recommding doing both. Will maybe start with charging handle first.

My 10/22 in 17mach2 had the heavy bolt handle, and it functioned fine for the few times I used it, but I sold it after seeing a few pictures of the results of a conversion firing out of battery.

I like any 17M2 discussion...so keep us posted on the progress.

Still looking for a 452 Varmint in 17M2 if anyone is asking. :)

I love the mach2 but the couple examples I've seen of converted 10/22s were not worth the cost. The owners were blaming the cci ammo and said Hornady was the winner. However since the same company makes both brands I passed on buying them. I'll stick to my bolt guns

I already have a CZ American and Marlin HB, SS. Despite all the bad press on the conversion it intrigues me. No idea why.

Wasn't there one in the EE last week?

There sure was  My second kit. It's a VQ polished SS barrel with a Power Custom weighted charging handle. My first is a 16" mid weight GM fluted with weighted charging handle set in a nice pepper laminate stock I picked up on ebay several years back.

I've never had any issues to date with my initial conversion. Fun little piece, accurate as heck.

I've seen a lot of Hornady .17 M2 that have split cases before they are fired - so it is no wonder that there may be a few kabooms in semi guns. If you have a few .17 bullets, take a good magnifying glass and have a close look at them. Have a look at your empties too.

I have owned semi-autos and bolt action rifles in 17hm2. Keep the chamber clean and you should be fine with the semi-auto conversion. I cleaned my chambers every 50 rounds and never experienced any kabooms. It would be in your best interest to wear glasses of some sort and not to hold your hand under the magazine when shooting the gun.
