Got a plinker 10/22 and I would like to improve the trigger without buying a new hammer. Anyone have experiance with removing the trigger group and polishing the hammer/sear and related components. If so, how hard is it to reassemble and also how do you sand and polish the components, is it neccesary to retain the angles or is 2000 grit sandpaper and polishing okay.
-Thanks

yeah, I have read up everything about it, but they dont go into detail about the honing and polishing process. Thinking of doing it tonight but need to know how to hone and polish the components, is there specific angles that need to be followed??

Polish the mating surfaces to take the roughness out. Then very slowly polish the sear on the hammer. Only do a little then re-assemble and test the trigger pull. I've done a few and never over done it, but it is possible. The trick is to get the pull weight down without making the action unsafe when bumped. I find that once I get to 3lbs it's a huge improvement over stock and still plenty safe.

While your at it, radius the bolt as shown on the site, makes a nice improvement on the cycling.

I'd take a good look inside the trigger group and take a good picture before you pull it apart. It's not at all difficult but positioning of the spring for the bolt release might make you scratch your head!!!

Should you over do it on the hammer, a drop in VQ or other brand will get you back to shooting and with the trigger your looking for.

Is there any difficulty with reinstalling all the components after completed, and what grit paper should I use before polishing.

Only issue is putting the trigger, sear and disconnector back in. Just cut a small piece of something like a q-tip or toothpick to keep the sear in place so you can drop it in and put the pin in. If that doesn't make sense now it will later :D

For the polishing I just went and bought a CT wet/dry sandpaper pack for a couple bucks, went 320, 400, 600, 800 then flitz. Turns out smooth but not mirror finish, that will require a lot of metal removal on some rough parts. Just don't round anything off and you will be fine.

I used a piece of a shishkabob scurr, but I watched a YouTube video and the guy used a section of weed wipper line. :p

I know there expensive, but have you considered a VQ trigger kit? Even with the mods you are talking about, your still left with that gawd awful trigger, its just ugly

Just polishing the components will help but you will still have a creepy, heavy trigger. If you want the "perfect" trigger you need to do the set-screws in the hammer and sear and replace the trigger return plunger/spring with torsion spring setup. PM me your e-mail and I can send you the instructions for the set-screws and you can look up the torsion return spring here http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120350&highlight=torsion+trigger+return+spring , other stuff http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1736815&postcount=38 , http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122386&highlight=cletus+hungwell ,

I've done 5 triggers this way now and it is wayyyyy better that the VQ or anything else. I actually have the VQ hammer and sear I put in my first modded 10/22. They have been drilled and tapped ala "sawdust" now also as with this method you get a 2# crist trigger every time.

FFFFFFFF@@@@@@@@@@@((((((((((((((((############!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That makes sense now!!!

I completely disassembled my 10/22 trigger group on Friday and it took me like 15 minutes to get that part back in without it springing apart and me having to take it out and retry. :slap: (Yes, I am slapping myself) :p

heres a link that show how to disassemble and reassemble the trigger group with pictures...it helped me a lot on my first time!
