I was just plinking at my range today trying to figure out what's screwed up with my 10/22.

Pardon my poor knowledge of the technical terms but:

It cycles fine when I fire it, however, after I take a shot, when I ease my finger off the trigger, if I squeezed too hard or don't ease far enough, it won't fire when I squeeze it again.

I don't get any stovepipes, but I found that I have to push the trigger forward a little bit (which makes the trigger group "click" a little bit) to be able to fire.

I think there's something wrong with the spring that pushes the trigger forward - but I don't know how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I think your right it sounds like its the trigger return spring and the plunger, if you google a exploded diagram of the 10/22 trigger system you can find step by step guide on how to take it apart, I took my plunger out and polished it to a very bright smooth finish, and my trigger functions better then ever (it always worked fine though) , look at the sticky on he top of this page and give it a try polish the hole trigger system you will be suprised how much smoother and better your gun will work

Its also possible your missing the spring, did you get the gun new or used?

The gun is new.

I took the trigger guard out but haven't got a chance to take it apart.

When I look at it assembled though the trigger plunger (I think that's the part) appears to be making contact with the trigger at an angle.

Yea mines like that too Its the way they drilled the hole I think, Id say it must be in there to tight or not able to move freely Try a drop of oil and see if it frees up a little....... when you get a chance take the plunger out and give it a nice polishing job It should work fine then, Also make sure the spring is in there you never know its possible they never installed one.

I tried putting in a longer spring in place of the one that was already there; when I did my function test it felt like it had more force pushing the trigger forward, bu I'll have to bring it to the range for the definitive test.

ive got the same problem with my 10/22 what do you suggest i use to polish the plunger and return spring

If the gun is just new why not just bring it back to the shop and get them to either check it out or replace the gun for one that works properly.

Just a thought , most places what to have happy return customers .

I bought mine about a year ago and the problem's only started recently... and I did some "modifications" to mine.

I think it stands to reason though that putting in a stronger spring would force the trigger forward - I think my problem is I'm accustom to squeezing the trigger long after I've fired .

to polish the return plunger I used a dremel with a polishing wheel and some polishing compound, theres a product that canadian tire sells that is by the best metal polish I have ever used its called blue magic thats what I used. You can also use a polish wheel on a drill, If you want a new return spring try ebay or brownells.com, id give the polishing job a chance first if I were you
