Folks,
I have a Butler Creek composite barrel that I bought several years ago for my 10/22 target model. I really like how it changes that heavy 10/22 into a nice handling, easy carrying piece. Shoots accurate too,BUT and its a big but:p, it just does not feed and extract as reliably as the ruger barrel. It was also finicky due to the target chamber. Anyone have experience fixing this. Please don't tell me how I should throw it away and buy brandX, just not in the piggy bank right now:( I want to make this one work.

Have you installed the Volquartsen extractor??

This little item usually cures a lot of the reliability woes in the Ruger 10/22. On my last build I replaced the factory one before I had even shot the rifle for the first time.

Even still with the tighter chamber on aftermarket barrels you may still have trouble extracting a chambered live round. I know my Dlask barrel usually needs help with a pocket knife to remove a live round when all the gophers are gone and it's time to pack up. Often with cheap bulk ammo it's easier to just pull the mag and just discharge the loaded round downrange.

As for feeding, most times that is magazine related. Factory mags are usually best but I have had good luck with Butler Creek (both steel and hot lips). That is some experimenting you will have to try.

Good luck

We stock the extractors, $18. Also Butler creek mags & the new Promag steel lips mags. They seem to be on par with the B/C mags, but a bit cheaper. Tight chambers give better accuracy, but less reliability. Price you pay for accuracy.

Surfclod,
The rifle works fine with the stock Ruger barrel and magazine (although it won't digest my favourite small game round, Remington Subsonics) so it is not the magazine. Like HiCal said tight chamber give better accuracy but less reliability. I wonder if the Butler creek barrel has tool marks, or such, in the chamber....causing the extraction woes. What happens is that it will leave a spent round in the chamber and sometimes will leave a live round when I manually retract the bolt to unload. Is there a way to polish the chamber w/o changing its dimensions:confused:

We sell brand new Ruger barrels for $29, with sights. Pick one up to lighten your gun & improve reliability, use the target bbl for bench shooting. check it out HERE
